I Woke Up on the Floor
...a grandmother's story
My grandson, Landon, age 3 1/2, has been waking up in the middle of the night. As you can imagine, this is tiring out his parents. In the spirit of family, my husband and I offered to make sure our son and his wife got a full night’s sleep last night.
Jet lag stinks
Then my husband crashed at 8 p.m. To be fair, David had flown to meet me in Zurich, and we’d arrived back in the U.S. late Tuesday. Jet lag is real. It’s brutal. The weirdest part of jet lag is, well, you THINK you are fine, but you aren’t. You’re out of it. You’re walking around, talking, acting like a sane human being, but you aren’t.
Sleep deprivation is a killer
That means I had infinite sympathy for Chelsea and Michael when they told me Landon wasn’t sleeping through the night. I know first-hand what sleep deprivation can do to you and your marriage. They simply needed a good night’s sleep so they could strategize how to change Landon’s new (bad) habit!
Landon’s Big Boy Bed
Which is a long way of explaining why I was determined to keep Landon in his “big boy” bed last night. I rubbed his back. I sang to him. We had a long and insightful conversation about his best friend, Tucker, their Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.
When Landon whined, “I want to go see my mommy,” I explained she was sleeping.
“Nonie is here with you. Let’s talk about Tucker.” (I am Nonie. His other grandmother is Mimi, and my husband wanted to be called “Sir.” That means David is “Grandpa Sir.”)
That’s how I woke up on the floor. My head was on his mattress with my legs sprawled behind me. The bottom railing was under my torso. I may or may not have been wearing a Burger King crown. Hard to tell.
But he did sleep through the night without waking his mother or his father.
I call that a win.
If you have any suggestions for getting a little guy to stay in his bed, I’ve love to hear them in the chat section!
